NEW YORK, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Dentists across the country view periodontal or gum disease as an increasingly important oral and general health issue. But while dentists recognize the threat to patients, most people are not even aware of the disease or its symptoms.

Gum diseases may result from conditions where bacteria and plaque in the mouth damage the gum and bone that support the teeth. Though periodontal diseases progress differently, if left untreated, each can result in tooth loss and severe damage to the gums and bone.

In this Orbis News Special Report featuring American Dental Association President Dr. Timothy Rose, viewers are presented with both the symptoms and causes of gum diseases. One of the most obvious symptoms is bleeding gums. The causes of gum disease can differ in each individual -- from stress to smoking, or inadequate oral hygiene. If caught early, treatment is often successful. To help prevent gum disease, the American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist on a regular basis.
