Opus Dei bites back.

SHADOWY Catholic group Opus Dei has a new CONVERT in its war against The Da Vinci Code - actor Robert De Niro.

The Hollywood legend is set to star in a new flick about Opus Dei founder St Josemaria Escriva.

In the film The Da Vinci Code, the sect was portrayed as a powerhungry, pain-loving cult.

But an Opus Dei spokesman said the group hoped the new blockbuster flick would improve its public image.

He said: "Opus Dei is not funding the film but it would be a consultant to the project."

The Italian film company Lux Vide said it also wanted Antonio Banderas to act in the film. The conservative Catholic group claims to have more than 85,000 members in 60 different countries.
