Opticians' advice is very clear.

A Monklands opticians is highlighting the importance of looking after your eyes after statistics revealed more than 3000 residents of North Lanarkshire are at risk of developing glaucoma.

Dubbed the "silent thief of sight", glaucoma usually occurs when natural fluid inside the eye doesn't drain properly, leading to a buildup of pressure.

This can then cause damage to the optic nerve and nerve fibres from the retina, in most cases without any symptoms.

While the condition cannot be reversed, it can be managed - but early detection is key.

Andrew McGonagle from Specsavers Airdrie and Coatbridge, said: 'Our sight is so precious.

"We all make sure we visit our dentist every six months and a sight test every two years should also be on our to do lists.

"It could, quite literally, save your sight."
