New Product, Intelligent Software Module Development Kit, Enables

Companies and Government Agencies to Build Advanced Software Packages

that Further Automate Large-scale Software

Provisioning and Configuration

Opsware Inc. (Nasdaq:OPSW), the leading provider of data center automation (DCA) software, today announced availability of a new product, the Intelligent Software Module (ISM) Development Kit, which enables IT organizations to build advanced software packages called "Intelligent Software Modules." ISMs encapsulate operational best practices and IT policies to further automate and reduce the costs of software provisioning, configuration, and security compliance.

ISMs build on today's vendor-supplied software infrastructure and enterprise application packages by adding key data necessary to ease deployment and ensure operations and security integrity. ISMs prevent application failures and security breaches caused by misconfigurations and provisioning inaccuracies. Used with the Opsware System, ISM's take data center automation to the next level by adding additional automation capabilities to vendor-supplied software packages.

The growth of the Internet and the move to Web-based computing has brought about a shift from client/server computing to low cost Web-based architectures. With this has come a massive explosion in the number of servers and applications per enterprise, and the increasing complexity and lack of process automation have made servers and applications increasingly hard to deploy and manage, and vulnerable to attack. Today 70% of IT costs go towards data center management. Further, the CERT Coordination Center reported 82,094 hacker attacks in 2002, a 34X increase from the 2,412 attacks reported in 1995.

The ISM Development Kit allows customers to create advanced software packages in the form of ISMs that comply with IT policies and security requirements. Using Opsware, these ISMs can then be consistently and repeatedly deployed across a large number of servers located across many data centers, reducing the need for individual IT administrators to struggle with provisioning and configuration complexities for each individual deployment. Opsware will showcase the new ISM Development Kit at the Gartner Symposium held in Orlando, Florida, beginning October 19th, 2003.

"While every systems environment is unique they all share the common challenge of having to roll-out applications across their data center in a standardized and systematic manner," said Dr. Tim Howes, chief technology officer of Opsware Inc. "The ISM development kit allows companies to manage to a security baseline by creating an optimized installation footprint that can be easily duplicated and managed across multiple data centers. By embedding this intelligence in a software module, IT administrators can customize the installation process according to their own environment and consequently ensure consistency in every future software build."

ISMs can be developed for leading application servers, databases, web servers, middleware and applications -- in short, all of the interwoven pieces that comprise a multi-tier application environment. To date, ISMs have been built for complex software infrastructure products like Oracle and WebLogic, and support packaged enterprise applications such as Siebel and Peoplesoft. With the ISM Development Kit, customers and partners of Opsware can quickly develop ISMs for any commercial or homegrown software in their data center environment.

For example, provisioning large-scale WebLogic deployments is a highly manual task that requires expertise to deploy each instance. With a WebLogic ISM, any administrator can leverage the corporation's known best practices to deploy WebLogic quickly and consistently across any and all servers and data centers.

The growth of the Internet and the move to Web-based computing are creating the biggest transformation yet in IT -- a shift from client/server computing to low cost Web-based architectures. With this shift comes a massive explosion of servers and applications in data centers. The large numbers of servers and applications in today's data centers and the resulting increase in complexity render traditional, manual operations unsustainable. Automation is fast becoming a necessity. Opsware's data center automation software addresses the biggest interest in IT today -- lowering the cost of managing these thousands of servers and the applications that run on them. Organizations can use Opsware's data center automation software to automate operations across Windows, Linux and UNIX servers and applications distributed across multiple data centers.
