Opportunity knocks for contracts; CONSTRUCTING EXCELLENCE.

THIS week, the Government has announced details of the latest public sector construction opportunities available - work worth an estimated PS109bn. A new online portal, where these opportunities have been released, lists all of the construction work available up to 2020 and beyond.

Following the latest spending round for the year 2015-2016, in excess of 1,000 opportunities have been listed on the Government's construction pipeline, which is reviewed every six months. This regular updating of information will mean those in construction are given more time to prepare and plan for upcoming projects - good news for companies looking for future work.

Over the last two years, the Government has worked with the construction industry to improve the pipeline and this is the first time the online portal has been used to house all details of the upcoming work.

Funding for projects include: ? PS370m set aside in 2015-2016 for the long-term funding settlement for flood defences, alongside further funding commitments to deliver improved protection to at least 300,000 homes; ? More than PS3.3bn earmarked to build 165,000 affordable new homes in England over the next three years; ? More than PS40bn committed to building the controversial High Speed 2 network; ? Treble today's annual investment levels in major road schemes by 2020-2021.

I am taken aback that some of these projects are still available to work on - I would have thought suppliers all over the UK would have jumped at the chance to sign up to work on a project such as flood defences with a given budget of more than PS250,000 allocated.

The new portal, which is hosted by the Government's private sector partner Barbour ABI, is located at I'm pleased to see the Government's long-term commitment to helping the economy re-enforced. It also shows the recognition that being transparent about the opportunities available in the public sector is exactly what is needed so we can start planning better, investing in and boosting how capable we are as businesses to perform.
