Operation Veritas : MI5 to sign up junior spies.

Byline: CHRIS HUGHES

BRITISH secret service bosses have launched a massive recruitment drive for junior spies because of the war against Osama bin Laden and his Taliban backers.

Security chiefs at MI5 are offering pounds 19,000-a-year salaries to experts in Urdu, Farsi, Pushtu and Arabic - dialects spoken by hardline Moslems fighting in Afghanistan.

M15 are also looking for linguistic specialists in various forms of Arabic to help translate intercepted communications from North African countries.

Many of the bin Laden suspects on the FBI and M15 wanted lists are believed to have come from Arabic areas.

Last night, a security expert said: "This is a sure sign the secret service has woken up to the fact it is desperately behind in the intelligence war against international terrorism."

The astonishing newspaper advertisements warn: "Please avoid telling people about your application - discretion is an essential part of working for the security service."
