OpenNetwork Technologies Addresses Association for Electronic Health Care Transactions.

Business/Technology Editors and Health/Medical Writers

CLEARWATER, Fla.--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 17, 2000

OpenNetwork Technologies(R), a leader in eBusiness and directory service software, will address the Association for Electronic Health Care Transactions (AFEHCT) on August 17 & 18 in Washington DC. David Sweigert, director of HIPAA programs for OpenNetwork will speak about security issues related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has mandated security regulations for HIPAA, which will dictate how healthcare plans, healthcare providers and healthcare claims clearinghouses store and transact electronic patient records and information. HIPAA compliance will be mandatory within 26 months and will include severe civil and criminal penalties for violations and non-compliance.

AFEHCT is hosting an industry-wide HIPAA summit on how to implement HIPAA-compliant technology within healthcare organizations. OpenNetwork Technologies will discuss how it is using digital signatures in healthcare related projects (digital signature technology is used to authenticate users as they access information). The information will be presented as case studies on usability, interoperability and cost-effectiveness of Internet authentication using public key infrastructure (PKI).

OpenNetwork is commenting on this technology for healthcare because its flagship product, DirectorySmart(TM), has been adopted by health insurance providers across the country as a cost-effective eBusiness solution and serves as a foundation for HIPAA compliance. DirectorySmart allows patients, care providers and administrators to quickly access pertinent information stored in a healthcare organization's data system. Working in harmony with the impending HIPAA regulations, DirectorySmart authenticates user access at every logon and ensures that users are provided with access to only the appropriate information.

OpenNetwork's current healthcare customers include: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas, South Carolina, Wisconsin and HealthPlan Services.
