Open-air living room: this Hollywood patio merges indoor comfort and secondhand style.
Along with two vintage metal rockers, a custom-made sofa with a Douglas fir base and cushions covered with weather-resistant Sunbrella fabric (sunbrella.com) provides ample space to lounge.
2 Garden art
An old neon sign, which the garden's owner and designer, Greg Sanchez, found at a swap meet, looks like a floating painting. The slender galvanized pole that supports it is nearly invisible in the greenery.
3 Multifunctional piece
A recycled metal bench, refitted with a teak top, serves as a perch for swimmers and a place to stack towels. It also acts as a barrier to keep guests from backing into the pool.
4 Fire bowl
A 48-inch-diameter cast concrete planter from CDI (concrete-designs.com), plumbed for gas, warms the area on cool evenings.
5 Area rug
Stripes of Dymondia margaretae set into one section of concrete add a carpetlike pattern that points toward the shapely Brazilian pepper tree. Its blue-gray color matches nearby succulents.
