Online Group Classes Help Solopreneurs Focus Ideas, Create Projects.
Anastasia Wasko is the principal of The Syntax Rugrat, a communication practice for solopreneurs, based in Kingston, NY. Wasko helps her solopreneur clients analyze information and focus in on the best options for their small-scale objectives. Then she guides them through the process of communicating those ideas. “People are empowered by all of the information and choice that is available to them. They go into business for themselves, construct lifestyles based on their skills and passion, but get overwhelmed by the management and marketing aspects. Sometimes, all you need is a sounding board, just an open ear, to figure it all out. It also helps to know that you are not alone!”
The practice, founded in 2005 as an independent editorial service, has evolved into an idea incubator—that is, a place for open discussion and constructive criticism exchange—for solopreneurs. Those who have worked with Wasko praise her ability to help her clients hone ideas, without stifling the creative process or enthusiasm. “I teach the 'process' for developing ideas into reality,” says Wasko. “I don't bring projects to fruition—rather, I teach solopreneurs and micro businesses how to do it themselves—how to get from the seed of an idea to the end result. At the end of our time together, they'll have a better notion of how to manage it all.”
Sound like fun? It is. But just like the catchy name (“A 'rugrat' usually refers to someone who's not old enough for school. Rugrats learn by experiencing and creating—not by memorizing and following the pack. We go off on our own to get what we need,” says Wasko.) and the fun logo (“It's a bouncing ball—as in, bouncing ideas.”), Wasko's consulting methods are also effective and memorable. “We take your doodles and show you how to connect the dots to see the big picture. Then you take what you've learned and apply it. It is part of the process of building a successful, sustainable microbusiness. The coolest part? The indie movement is a global thing! When my clients realize that they can use the Internet to connect with other solos across the globe, there is no stopping them,” says Wasko.
