Ongoing conflict can be resolved; Views of the North.

IT was moving to read of our youth's response to genocide (The Journal, January 26) in memory of Holocaust Memorial Day. We are barely one generation away from one of the most horrific atrocities in history.

The Jewish people, for all the pain and persecution they have endured, do not now however have the monopoly on suffering. How tragic that the oppressed have become the oppressors given Israel's brutal suppression of Palestinian people and the illegal occupation of their land. We have a generation of youth in Israel and Palestine where poor leadership, words of hate and the instruments of war keep them estranged to one another's suffering.

But we have the international mechanisms - particularly the UN, Arab League and EU - to end this 65-year-old conflict.

Let us hope our youth witness the hard work of peace-making triumph over violence within their lifetime. CATHERINE THICK, Equity & Peace, Belsay, Northumberland
