One of Newport's grandest old houses is to go under the hammer next month.

WHAT was once one of Newport's grandest houses will be offered for sale next month.

The Rothbury, at Stow Park Circle, will come under the hammer at a auction from auctioneers Clive Emson on June 13.

With a double-bay frontage, the late 19th-century house was a private dwelling before becoming a nursing home.

The now-empty building has a freehold guide price of PS250,000 to PS350,000.

It comes to market with planning consent for a guest house with restaurant and lapsed planning permission for apartments. Auction valuer Audrey Smith said: "This is a prestigious detached property for refurbishment, which retains many original features.

"It is an elevated location in a much sought-after and prestigious address on the western side of Newport with easy access to the M4.

"This is a superb opportunity to restore this grand house to its former glory either through its current planning consent, reviving its former scheme or following a new development plan subject to the necessary permissions."

Located within a 0.47-acre site, the property includes two coach houses and a store room with gardens and a large car park.

It also includes an ornamental staircase, reception rooms, central landing, cellar, driveway and large entrance hall.

An application for a time extension for its otherwise lapsed planning consent for six apartments is currently with the local authority.

The planning consent for the guest house and restaurant includes seven en-suite rooms.

The auction will be held in Cornwall at the St Mellion International Resort.
