Seven Maison Blanche stores in Florida don't seem to be enough for Dillard Department Stores Inc. of Little Rock.

Dillard's is going for an eighth Florida store, this one in Lakeland.

Maison Blanche spokeswoman Mary Sternberg acknowledges that a verbal agreement has been made, but she cautions that no papers have been signed.

The deal is not part of the sale of seven stores announced a couple of weeks ago. Dillard's might not take control of the Lakeland store in early August when it gains control of the others.

Maison Blanche built the Lakeland store in 1989 soon after it "inherited the commitment" in its purchase of Robinson's of Florida.

Dillard's did not return our phone calls.

Surprise. Surprise. Surprise.
