Omani businesses raise AN30mn for Japan.

Pub date: 20/4/2011

Oman's business community came together in an initiative by Oman LNG to contribute funds for the relief efforts for Japan this week. A friendly golf game, with participation from the supporting companies, started off a recent fundraising effort followed by dinner at the residence of Dr Brian Buckley, CEO of Oman LNG.

On the occasion, H E Seiji Morimoto, Japan's Ambassador to Oman, said, "We quite appreciate all the support we have received. I believe the most important thing for us is the sympathy and solidarity that we have been shown. We have received so many kind gestures and I really appreciate this initiative. We are encouraged by it."

H E Morimoto was pleased that the dinner brought together business leaders from a number of companies in the sultanate. The dinner was held under the patronage of H E Dr Mohammed bin Hamed al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas.

Acknowledging that the cost of recovery from the tsunami and earthquake was high and would run into billions of dollars, H E Morimoto noted that Japan would take it 'step-by-step' to achieve normal life again.

"May be this initiative here will feed a few people or house a few families because the problem is quite big. Nevertheless, it is the spi-rit of friendship and our ability to stand beside such wonderful people and a wonderful country that is also important," said H E Rumhy.

"In this fundraiser, we have achieved not one but two fantastic objectives. The businesses in Oman whom we approached for support were not only very happy to participate, but were also very appreciative of this noble effort. The other wonderful outcome of this event was that businesses from all walks of life were able to meet and network," said Cheryl Buckley, who was the lead organiser of this fundraiser.

Oman LNG, BEC Group, Comp-osite Pipes Industries, Deloitte, Grand Hyatt, Khimjis Ramdas, KPMG, Petroleum Development Oman, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Renaissance Services, TOCO, Oman Shipping Company, Trowers & Hamlins, SNR Denton, Qalhat

LNG, Ministry of Oil and Gas, Galfar, MB Petroleum Services, Petronas and Suhail Bahwan Group were among those that supported the

initiative. A total of AN30mn was raised at the event, according to H E Ruhmy.
