The former rower, who won gold for Britain in 2000 and 2004, was cycling from Canada to Mexico for a TV show when a truck hit him from behind.
James, 37, was rushed to hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. His wife, former Formula 1 TV presenter Be ver le y Turner, and their young son and daughter are at his bedside.
He is conscious, and his condition is "stable".

Progress They said in a statement: "He was involved in a road traffic accident while cycling in Winslow, Arizona.
"Doctors have said he is making very good progress. His wi fe and fami ly are with him as he continues to recover."
The bike ride was the latest in a series of epic challenges James has taken on since quitting competitive sport.
He has also rowed the Atlantic and trekked to the South Pole with TV presenter and pal Ben Fogle.
Ben was f lying out to Arizona yesterday to visit his friend. He said: "My thoughts and prayers go to James and his family at this anxious time.
"Hav ing spent many months in some of the toughest places on earth with him, I know how strongwilled he is and I'm sure he'll bounce back soon."
