Olton's Denise leads England to indoor success.

Olton's Denise Marston-Smith successfully led England to promotion in the women's EuroHockey Indoor Nations Championship II at Slagelse, Denmark, at the weekend.

Captaining the side, she scored the winning goal in England's 3-2 final match victory over Switzerland.

She also grabbed two goals in the opening 5-1 victory over Slovakia and the first goal in the 3-2 defeat of Lithuania.

England's only blip was a 3-1 defeat by France, who with England will play in the top flight next season.

Alice Sharp made her international debut in the tournament, playing alongside her Birmingham University teammate Sophie Bray.

In Argentina, another University player, midfielder Susie Gilbert, was turning out for Great Britain in the Cordoba Four Nations tournament in which GB lost 3-2 to Korea in the final. This week the team has travelled on to the FIH 2012 Champions Trophy in Rosario.

Cannock failed to gain promotion in the Maxifuel Super Sixes men's indoor hockey championship by losing their final match to bottom side Ipswich in National Division 2. The Staffordshire side finished in third place missing out on the opportunity to play in Division 1 in next year's championship.

After winning their two matches on Saturday they drew their first on Sunday and their hopes were dashed when tey lost both of the last two 6-5. Cannock are now looking ahead to the restart of the outdoor England Hockey League in a fortnight's time when they are at home to East Grinstead in a topof-the table clash in the Premier Division.

The Sussex side currently lead Cannock by four points.

Leamington-based Khalsa maintained their runaway 14 point lead of the ENER-G Midland League with a 3-1 defeat of Coventry & North Warwick. Trailing them on 25 points are Harborne, Stourport and West Bridgford, who all won last Saturday.
