Olofsson passes the torch to Plassat at Carrefour.

PARIS--Lars Olofsson announced his retirement as chief executive officer of Carrefour SA at a meeting of the board of directors and has been succeeded by Georges Plassat. Olofsson had been scheduled to step down on June 19, to be replaced by Plassat, who was hired on April 2 as chief operating officer and designated successor to Olofsson as CEO. Plassat joined Carrefour from the retailer Vivarte Group.

Plassat had already begun to make his mark at the world's second-largest retailer, apparently dismissing two senior executives in early May: Jose Carlos Gonzales-Hurtado, who was chief commercial officer, and marketing director Patrick Rouvillois. At presstime Carrefour had not confirmed that either executive has been released, but a Reuters story cited sources close to the company in reporting their dismissal.

Gonzales-Hurtado had been recruited in 2009 by Olofsson and was a member of the company's executive committee.
