AFANTASTIC day's barbel fishing on the Warwickshire Avon was topped off with a cracking double-figure fish for Julian Davies. Targeting a stretch near Stratford, Julian adopted a straightforward maggot feeder approach. He had been told that the barbel in the stretch averaged around 3lb but his first went 7lb with the session topped off with a personal best of 10lb 3oz. In all, he landed a dozen barbel for nearly 100lb.

"That was the best day's barbel fishing of my life," said Julian, who also had a rod out for zander on which he caught two double figure river pike. * Following successful trials run by Derek MacDonald, Northamptonshire water Elinor Trout Fishery is opening its doors to pike anglers from December 10.

Boats cost pounds 55 and with several 30lbplus fish caught during tests, you are advised to book early. Baits are available on site and the dates for your diary are December 10, 11, 17, 18; January 7, 8, 14 and 15 and February 4, 5, 11, 12. For more details, call Derek on 01536 745510.
