This volume recounts the colorful history of early America and the con-artists, thieves and unethical business men who plied their trades in the West. The work covers the period from colonial times to the 1920s and each chapter is devoted to one infamous actor. Scams discussed include land speculation, patent medicine sales, false mine claims, government contract graft and outright swindles. The personalities involved include P.T. Barnum, Patrick Henry and Albert Fall. The work includes several black and white photographs. Yadon is an Oklahoma attorney and independent historian and Smith is a retired colonel and is a professor of law at the University of Oklahoma.
