Old Columbia adding second brewhouse.

Karl Strauss' Old Columbia Brewery & Grill, San Diego's first brewpub, announced plans to expand operations by opening a second brewery to distribute is kegged beer to the city's restaurants, hotel and bars.

The announcement marks the first time in 50 years that a San Diego brewery will distribute locally-brewed beer on a full-scale basis. Beer produced at the new location will supplement the distribution of its Karl Strauss Amber Lager, which is currently handled from the original brewpub.

The new microbrewery will be located in the Midway Industrial District in a 4,000-square-foot warehouse. The 20-barrel capacity Brewing equipment will more than double the brewery's present output.

"We've been receiving inquiries almost daily from restaurants, hotels and bars that want to serve Karl Strauss' Amber Lager," explained Christopher Cramer, brewery president. "The new brewhouse will allow us to increase our distribution operation and meet the tremendous demand for Uncle Karl's beer."

According to strauss, Old Columbia's masterbrewer, "The new microbrewery will play a big part in expanding our market. San Diegans who haven't yet tasted my brewery-fresh, all-natural beer will have the opportunity to enjoy it in select restaurants and bars."
