Okra discovered as second host plant of Pink Bollworm.

MULTAN -- The Cotton Research Station (CRS) discovered lady finger (Okra- vegetable) as second host plant of Pink Bollworm, which has been damaging cotton crop seriously for last three years.

The research was jointly contacted by three noted cotton scientists namely Dr Sagheer, Dr Haider Karar and Dr Shafqat Saeed.

Director Cotton Research Station Dr Sagheer talking to reporter stated that Pink bollworm was considered a monophagous pest living only on cotton plant. Recently research conducted at Cotton Research Station Multan has revealed lady finger (okra) as a second host plant posing the cotton crop more vulnerable and augurs serious threat to cotton production in province. Dr Sagheer added that cotton had already witnessed sharp decline in its yield.

The recent shortfall of cotton production (45% over the last year) during the cotton crop season 2015-16 in Punjab has also been attributed to high infestation of pink bollworm. This pest is very devastating as it not only adversely affects yield but also deteriorates yarn quality and considerably brings down cotton seed germination, observed the director.

Strategy to mitigate its effects on the coming cotton crop includes shredding of cotton sticks, destruction of left over boll, keeping cotton sticks in upright position, heavy irrigation of fallow field of cotton, destruction/burning of cotton seed debris in the ginning factories, use of pheromones traps for monitoring, PB Rope in cotton fields, crop rotation, control of Pink bollworm on lady finger/cotton, exploring new chemistry of the pesticides and devising prediction model for effective control of this pest, concluded Dr Sagheer.
