October 28--Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft announces the signing of an agreement with the Chilean Ministry of Economic Affairs to open a biotechnology laboratory in Santiago de Chile. Signed in Berlin in the presence of Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the agreement sets the stage for the new research center, which will be supported by a partnership between Fraunhofer, Europe's largest applied-research organization, and two Chilean universities, with funding from INNOVAChile, a government body created to attract international research institutes to Chile. Both German and Chilean researchers will work at the center, which will focus on technologies related to fish diseases vaccines, nanotechnologies to remove pesticide residues from liquid and purify wastewater, and technologies to increase the efficiency of biomass for energy production.
