Ocean Spray Cranberries Announces Formation of Jean Driscoll Award

National Award Will Provide $10,000 To Deserving Women Wheelchair Athletes

LAKEVILLE, Mass. and MIDDLEBORO, Mass., Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Ocean Spray Cranberries announced today that it is now accepting applications for the Jean Driscoll Award, with $10,000 total to be awarded to women wheelchair athletes.

Named after the seven-time Boston Marathon wheelchair division winner, the Jean Driscoll Award is open to women who are seniors in high school or older. They must actively participate in at least one wheelchair sport, act as a positive role model, and encourage others through sportsmanship, enthusiasm and dedication. Applicants do not have to be professional or full-time wheelchair athletes to be eligible.

"I'm so thrilled that Ocean Spray created this Award," said Driscoll, who in addition to her seven Boston Marathon victories also won a silver medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, two gold medals in the 1996 Paralympic Games, and holds four world records in varying wheelchair racing events. "It helps raise the recognition of wheelchair athletes but, more importantly, it encourages wheelchair athletes to crave to be their best."

The Jean Driscoll Award offers a $5,000 first place Award, $2,500 for second place, $1,500 for third place and $1,000 for fourth place. It is part of Ocean Spray's national CRAVE TO BE YOUR BEST(TM) program, which offers more than $150,000 in support of women athletics. Applicants for the Jean Driscoll Award will be required to submit how they would utilize the Award money -- e.g., schooling, equipment or training.

Ocean Spray is a national corporate sponsor of Jean Driscoll, and also is a primary sponsor of the Women's Sports Foundation.

"Jean Driscoll has had an inspiring 1996, with a seventh Boston Marathon title, multiple gold medals at the Paralympics, and a string of race- and world-records," said Skip Colcord, manager, marketing communications at Ocean Spray. "But more impressive is Jean's enthusiasm, work ethic and attitude toward life. We've learned through our relationship with her that Jean is an inspiration to people throughout the country. This award will bring additional attention to the courage and determination of wheelchair athletes."
