Obstetric fistula is one of most serious injuries of childbirth: Dr.Kazi.
HYDERABAD -- Chairperson Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology LUMHS, Prof. Dr. Roshan Ara Kazi said that one of the most serious injuries of childbirth, obstetric fistula, is a hole in the birth canal caused by prolonged, obstructed labour due to lack of timely and adequate medical care.
She said the baby, in most cases is either stillborn or dies within the first week of life, and the woman suffers a devastating injury, a fistula, that renders her incontinent.
In connection with International Fistula Day Prof. Dr. Roshan Ara Kazi, said the majority of pregnancies and deliveries are uneventful while some involve complications that range from minor to life threatening for the mother, for the baby, or for both.
Dr. Roshan Ara Kazi said if left untreated, fistula can lead to chronic medical problems, including ulcerations, kidney disease, and nerve damage in the legs.
Dr. Kazi further informed that we have launched a different project to provide free surgical treatment of fistula in the country. She said a simple surgery could normally repair the injury, with
success rates as high as 90 per cent for experienced surgeons. Most women with the condition do not know that treatment is available, or they cannot afford it, she added.
