OWENS-CORNING WINS GE PLASTICS QUALITY AWARD

ANDERSON, S.C., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Owens-Corning (NYSE: OCF) accepted GE Plastics' "Partners in Quality" (PIQ) award here today for excellence in overall product and productivity quality. The company's Anderson, S.C., plant supplies GE with chopped strand glass fiber reinforcments for many GE Plastics' products.
"Owens-Corning has really surpassed the award's requirements for consistency and quality in product," said Michael DeCata, GE Plastics America, Quality Manager. "In fact, Owens-Corning was recently the first of our suppliers to achieve the maximum score on a new Total Quality Report Card based on statistical analysis."
Owens-Corning is among a select group of suppliers to have received the PIQ award. The main goals of the PIQ program are to ensure that the participating supplier always meets GEP requirements, consistently improves product uniformity and demonstrates a philosophy of continual improvement.
This past summer, the Anderson plant earned ISO 9002 registration which is also a requirement for the GE Award. ISO 9002 covers quality system management, from purchasing and production through to packaging, handling, storage and delivery.
"We've been working with GE for the past three years to ensure that we meet the specifications that we've mutually agreed upon regarding performance targets, test methods, shipping, safety, packaging and data requirements," explained Corey Melvin, Owens-Corning product engineer. "We got over many of these hurdles early on and then earned our ISO 9002 registration."
In an awards ceremony at the Anderson plant, John Biltucci, of GE Plastics' Mount Vernon Quality Services, and DeCata, presented the PIQ award to Jerry Hawkins, Anderson's plant manager. The Anderson facility manufactures a variety of glass fiber reinforcements.
"Our work with GE Plastics represents our mutual commitment to the growth of fiber reinforced thermoplastic markets and applications," said Gary Nieman, Owens-Corning business manager for chemical compounders. "This award is an excellent tribute to the parnership the two companies have developed."
"Owens-Corning continues to excel in total quality, including areas such as productivity programs, and technology development and exchange," added DeCata. "Our intent is to continue to grow and succeed together."
Owens-Corning is the world's largest manufacturer of glass fiber reinforcements and a major producer of polyester and vinyl ester resin, with world headquarters in Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A.
