OVERSEAS EXPANSION PLANS RATE HIGH WITH CATALOGERS, SAYS MAXWELL SROGE

CHICAGO, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The catalogs are coming. The catalogs are coming. U.S. catalog companies are in a virtual race to claim their positions in England and Europe according to Maxwell Sroge, president of the Chicago-based catalog consulting firm of the same name.
Led by catalogers selling computers and computer supplies, the parade is now being joined by some of America's best known catalog names, including Lands' End and L.L. Bean. "It's no wonder American catalogers are making a bee-line for England, and the continent," said Maxwell Sroge. "Response rates in England are three to four times better than the U.S. There simply is a big void to be filled and with a 280 million person E.E.C. about to become reality, the potential is enormous," he said.
"Success of course isn't automatic," Sroge said. "For example, Lands' End looks like they have a big winner on their hands in England and L.L. Bean appears to be in need of re-grouping."
Sroge expects to see at least six American catalogs set up test operations this year in England and double that next year.
