AND CONTINENTAL AIRLINES HOST HOLIDAY PARTY FOR AREA CHILDREN
NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Santa Claus opted for a helicopter rather than his traditional sleigh when he arrived at Continental Airlines' Hangar No. 55 at Newark International Airport with toys for over 2,000 disabled children at the Community Mayors of New York and New Jersey's annual holiday party, called "Operation Santa Claus."
Sponsored by the Community Mayors and Continental Airlines, the party hosted more than 2,000 disabled children from the metropolitan area to a fun-filled day of games and entertainment. The Community Mayors of New York & New Jersey is an all volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to providing recreational programs for blind, physically disabled and retarded children.
Newark Archbishop, Theodore E. McCarrick, began the festivities with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, following which clowns, marching bands, jugglers and musicians entertained the children. A wheelchair basketball team exhibited their talent along with members of the Olympic Judo Team, including one physically disabled member.
"It brings us tremendous joy to organize these parties each year. Bringing the smiles to these children's faces are what the holidays are all about," said Dominick Della Rocca, executive chief mayor.
In addition, Ronald McDonald and dozens of volunteers, assisted with face painting, magic tricks, balloons, music, puppet shows and skits.
"Continental is delighted to have made a difference in the lives of these young people and hope that we made the holidays a little brighter for all these children," said Richard Lisser, Continental city vice president and head of operations at Newark.
McDonald's and Good Humor donated hot dogs, ice cream and other refreshments for the children. The World Wrestling Federation and former National Football League players also participated in the event.
The party concluded with the arrival of Santa Claus who touched down by helicopter bringing gifts for all the children.
The Community Mayors of New York and New Jersey is an all volunteer organization, whose members include leaders in industry, labor, education, the entertainment industry and sports.
