OVER 1,500 DEVELOPERS LINE UP FOR NEWTON PLATFORM

CUPERTINO, Calif., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Developer interest and support for Apple's Newton technology continues to gain momentum as the company closes in on the official launch date for its first Newton communications assistant product. According to the company, more than 1,500 developers have expressed an interest in developing applications and titles for the Newton family. A number of developers will have products ready to ship as early as the fall of this year; it is anticipated that these products will be announced at the time of launch of the first Newton.
"There's a lot of wind in Newton's sails right now." said Philip Ivanier, Development Relations manager at PIE. "Developers are attracted by Apple's licensing of 'Newton Intelligence' to major corporations such as Matsushita, Motorola and Sharp. And since Apple's worldwide developer conference in May we have held some workshops for developers in the United States, Japan and Europe, shipped a comprehensive suite of developer tools -- the Newton Toolkit, and we are in the closing stages of formulating a full developer program that has been receiving excellent early reviews from the community. This program will encompass a variety of options to address the needs of different developers."
Newton Toolkit -- which is due for fall shipment -- will provide graphical layout capabilities, and will utilize both the NewtonScript programming language and built-in Newton components. It will support content, applications development and authoring tools. These tools can significantly reduce the effort and programming time associated with application development, therefore increasing the productivity of developers using the Newton Toolkit.
