OUT SHOPPING? ORDER NEW JERSEY BELL OPTIONAL SERVICES
 AT YOUR FAVORITE STORE
NEWARK, N.J., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- While shopping for televisions, telephones and other consumer electronics products, consumers now can learn about and order telephone services in several New Jersey retail stores. Retailers including Stern's, Rickel Home Centers and 6th Ave. Electronics City stores have agreed to sell several optional features offered by New Jersey Bell, a Bell Atlantic company.
The effort is part of an innovative program developed by Bell Atlantic Network Services Inc. and Northern Telecom Inc. to sell telephones and services in selected consumer retail stores in the states served by Bell Atlantic's local telephone companies.
Sales trials that are underway at 18 New Jersey stores are designed to make shopping for optional telephone services more convenient for residential and small business customers. These customers traditionally order such services by calling telephone company business offices or by responding to direct mail advertisements.
Featured services include Caller ID, Call Waiting and Answer Call.
Trials have begun at 6th Ave. Electronics City stores in Paramus and Springfield, as well as ten Stern's locations. The program will be expanded to six Rickel Home Centers in early October.
"We're looking for additional, cost-effective ways to reach out to our customers. Established retailers will help us do that while people are already out shopping," said Len Lauer, New Jersey Bell's vice president for sales.
"Shoppers will be able to select from a number of optional services to meet their individual needs for security and convenience -- services that also will save them time and enable them to remain within reach when they're on the go."
Caller ID helps customers manage incoming calls and maintain security by letting them know who is calling before they answer the phone.
Call Waiting allows customers to remain accessible even when they are on another call.
Answer Call acts like an answering machine on the customer's telephone line with no equipment to clutter the home. Customers can receive messages when not at home or on another call. When used with Caller ID, customers can see the number of the person who is calling and choose to let certain calls go to Answer Call and to pick up others.
The stores feature a display unit that invites shoppers to pick up a special phone and talk with a Bell Atlantic local telephone company representative for service information and ordering. The display, which was developed in conjunction with Northern Telecom, will feature Northern Telecom telephone equipment, including a Caller ID unit, or, if the retailer prefers, the Rhapsody, a Caller ID telephone with voice mail capabilities. The stores involved in the program sell equipment manufactured by Northern Telecom as well as other suppliers.
As the trials proceed, other retailers will be added to the list of stores participating in the sales program.
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), based in Philadelphia, is the parent company of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware), and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone companies of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
