OUR LONG AND NOBLE PAST OF NOBEL WINNERS.

THIS year's Nobel Prize winners have come from all around the world - but did you know that Kirklees and Calderdale have been hotspots for winners of the award? Four prize winners have come from the two boroughs. That's more winners per square mile than larger areas such as Manchester and Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.

The first such winner was Owen Willans Richardson who, in 1928, won the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Born in Dewsbury, he was awarded the prize for his work in the field of electromagnetism and subsequently gave his name to the law of physics arising from his research.

Most recently Robert Edwards, from Batley, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010 for his research into reproductive medicine.

And in 1951, Todmorden-born John Cockroft also won the Nobel Prize in Physics along with Ernest Walton, for their work in nuclear physics. The pair are credited as being the first to successfully split the atom.

Geoffrey Wilkinson, also from Todmorden, jointly won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1973 with Ernest Otto Fischer.

The UK has been the birthplace of 88 Nobel Prize winners to date, making it the second most successful country behind the USA which boasts a colossal 255 winners.

Germany comes third with 61 winners followed by France with 48.

New York has given birth to more winners than any other place on earth with 45. London has produced 17 winners and finishes third behind Paris which boasts 23.

There are six different categories in the Nobel awards: chemistry, physics, literature, medicine, peace and economic sciences.

The winners of this year's prize are being announced daily this week.
