OTIS WINS LANDMARK ELEVATOR CONTRACT IN KUALA LUMPUR

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Otis Elevator Company today announced at a press conference here that its Malaysian operation, Pernas Otis Elevator Company, has won the coveted contract to supply 96 elevators and escalators for The Petronas Towers, part of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre project. Worth RM 140 million (US $56 million), the contract is believed to be the single largest new equipment order ever awarded in the elevator/escalator industry.
The 88-story twin Petronas Towers will be the centerpiece of a downtown commercial development encompassing 100 acres, making Kuala Lumpur City Centre one of the world's largest real estate projects. The towers, connected by a skybridge at the 41st and 42nd floors, will be Asia's tallest buildings at 428 meters. This project also will be the world's largest double-deck elevator installation.
Otis will install 58 double-deck elevators, 18 other elevators and 20 escalators. Otis Manufacturing Company in Penang, Malaysia, will supply the escalators for this landmark project; the elevators will be manufactured at Otis' Bloomington, Indiana (U.S) plant.
"It is an honor to be involved with such a prestigious development, one that will change the skyline of Malaysia's great capital city," said Yaakup Latif, general manager of Pernas Otis.
"With our worldwide plants, extensive engineering resources and wealth of experience in elevatoring most of the world's tallest buildings, Otis is well-equipped to handle a project of this magnitude," he added.
Latif explained that double-deck elevators were chosen to save space in the building core. A double-deck elevator consists of two cars constructed one atop the other in order to serve alternate floors simultaneously. Double-deck units reduce the number of elevator shafts needed in the building, thereby increasing the amount of rentable space. Otis has supplied more than 80 percent of the double-deck elevators worldwide, including many in Asia.
Vern Stait, president of Otis' Pacific Asia Operations, said that Otis will be bidding for additional elevator contracts in other stages of the project involving a retail development, car parking lots, office complexes and a hotel.
Work at the towers is scheduled to begin in March 1994. About 140 Otis employees will be required, with about 5,000 other workers expected on site at the height of construction activities.
"We will be bringing in Otis specialists from around the world for this project," Latif said, "including Ian Millar from our United Kingdom office, who will serve as project director. Ian has had broad experience with several landmark projects, including Canary Wharf in the London Docklands, and the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank."
Latif added that Pernas Otis also will recruit local talent for a variety of positions in accounting, purchasing, engineering and administrative support. "We expect our need for more local staff to grow as the project develops," he said.
The towers, which have been described as resembling tapered candles, were designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates of New Haven, Connecticut.
Otis Elevator Company, the world's leader in the manufacture and service of elevators and escalators, is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, based in Hartford, Connecticut. Otis sells and installs more than 33,000 elevators annually, including about 8,000 in Pacific Asia.
Otis' Pacific Asia headquarters is in Singapore and the company employs about 10,000 people throughout the region.
