* Christopher Cooper-Hohn, a hedge fund boss, has given away pounds 72.1m of an estimated pounds 90m wealth.

David Hockney, a British artist, has donated pounds 78.1m worth of paintings to charitable causes. * Richard Branson, Virgin founder, gave away pounds 358m last year and was one of the first people to sign up for the Legacy 10 initiative, which encourages wealthy people to pledge 10% of their estate to charitable causes.

Warren Buffet, an American business magnate, investor and philanthropist, pledged in 2006 to steadily give away 99% of all his wealth. By July last year, he had already given away $11bn.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have given $30bn to charity and run the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
