(NASDAQ: OSTE), announced today that it had received Patent No. 5,147,401 on an artificial skin made from the company's Polyactive(TM) polymer. The resorbable polymer was developed by the company's subsidiary, HC Implants, in Leiden, the Netherlands, in conjunction with the Biomaterials Research Group on the University of Leiden. Osteotech acquired HC/CAM Implants, a worldwide leader in bioceramic and biomaterial technology, in the second quarter of 1992.
"This patent represents a significant milestone in what we anticipate to be the first of many patents from the Polyactive technology" stated Patrick McBrayer, Osteotech's president and chief executive officer.
Dirkjan Bakker, Ph.D., HC Implants director of research and development and inventor of the Polyactive artificial skin stated that "the Polyactive technology is extremely versatile. We currently have products in development with bone bonding capability for orthopedic application as well as anti-adhesion sheets for use in spinal, general surgical procedures, dental membranes and an artificial tympanic membrane for the middle ear." McBrayer also stated that "Osteotech will concentrate on musculoskeletal applications for Polyactive while seeking corporate partnerships for other unique surgical applications." The first commercial application of Polyactive, the tympanic membrane, should be introduced in Europe in 1993.
