OSTEOTECH AWARDED GRANT BY DUTCH GOVERNMENT FOR RESEARCH ON POLYACTIVE

SHREWSBURY, N.J., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Osteotech, Inc. (NASDAQ: OSTE) announced today that the Dutch Ministry of Economics has awarded its subsidiary, HC Implants BV, a grant for 2,126,600 Dutch guilders (approximately $1,175,000) to support research on the calcification process of Polyactive(TM). Polyactive, which is owned exclusively by HC Implants, is a resorbable polymer developed in conjunction with the Biomaterials Research Group at the University of Leiden. The calcification project will result in developing the process to preimpregnate Polyactive with calcium to optimize its use as a bone filler, and will clarify the natural calcification process which takes place once the material is implanted in or adjacent to bone. The grant will commence on Jan. 1, 1994, and support research on this project through Dec. 31, 1997.
Polyactive has several unique properties which enable it to bond with bone and to facilitate bone growth. "Preliminary data suggests that precalcification further enhances the bone filling and bone bonding properties of Polyactive and this research grant will enable us to further study and optimize the material," stated Wendy Dixon, Ph.D., executive vice president and general manager of international operations of Osteotech. Clemens van Blitterswijk, Ph.D., chief researcher of the Polyactive material for the Biomaterials Research Group, University of Leiden, also stated, "We are pleased that our research project received the highest possible score from the Dutch Ministry. We are confident that our project with HC Implants will lead to new opportunities for surgical use of Polyactive." The Polyactive polymer can also be formulated to act as a biodegradable adhesion barrier, creating potential opportunity for a broad range of orthopedic, surgical and dental applications.
Osteotech, Inc., headquartered in Shrewsbury, is a leading processor of human bone and bone connective tissue for transplantation and an innovator in the development and marketing of biologic, biomaterial and implant products for musculoskeletal surgery.
