ORTHOMET PROJECTS THIRD QUARTER LOSS

 ORTHOMET PROJECTS THIRD QUARTER LOSS
MINNEAPOLIS, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Orthomet, Inc. (NASDAQ: OMET)

announced today that based on anticipated disappointing third quarter sales results, the company expects to report a loss in the range of $850,000, or $.20 per share, for its third fiscal quarter ended March 31, 1992.
Sales for the third quarter are projected to be approximately $3.3 million, compared with $4.2 million in both the second fiscal quarter of the current year and the third fiscal quarter of the previous year.
The company said that the disappointing sales results are caused primarily by a decrease in product purchases by stocking distributors together with a slower than anticipated expansion in the company's sales agent network.
Richard D. Nikolaev, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "We believe sales of our products to physicians are increasing. These sales are not reflected in current estimates of Orthomet sales as certain stocking distributors are reducing their inventories on hand. We have been and will continue taking appropriate action to improve our existing dealer network. We will also continue to aggressively recruit agents for currently uncovered sales territories."
The company expects fourth quarter sales to show modest improvement over the third quarter. This will result in a net loss the extent of which will be dependent on product sales mix. Based on the projected second half financial results, the company will incur a loss for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1992.
Orthomet, Inc. is in the business of designing, manufacturing and marketing selected orthopedic reconstructive implant products and related surgical instrumentation.
