ORTHOLOGIC INTRODUCES ORTHOFRAME(TM) EXTERNAL FIXATION DEVICE

PHOENIX, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- OrthoLogic (NASDAQ-NMS: OLGC), a developer of technologically advanced orthopaedic trauma products, announced today that it has begun shipment and sale of its first commercial product, OrthoFrame(TM), an external fixation device for use by orthopaedic surgeons in treating complex bone fractures. OrthoFrame, which incorporates a number of patented features designed to facilitate fracture reduction and alignment, offers orthopaedic surgeons significant advantages over existing products.
OrthoFrame utilizes radiolucent, carbon fiber-epoxy materials to reduce the weight of the device significantly, and eliminate the need for surgeons to remove the device in order to perform X-rays.
In addition, OrthoFrame significantly increases convenience and ease-of-use for surgeons, since it is shipped preassembled in sterile packaging. This eliminates the need for nurses or surgeons to assemble the fixator from parts and sterilize the unit separately. OrthoFrame's versatile, patented design permits it to be utilized for immobilization of a wide array of fracture types, including tibia, femur, ankle, elbow and pelvic fractures.
"The shipment of OrthoFrame represents an important milestone in the development of revenue-generating products by the company," said Allan Weinstein, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of OrthoLogic. "It will assist us in broadening our presence in the orthopaedic community, while maintaining our focus on technology-based trauma products."
OrthoFrame incorporates features covered under four separate patents licensed to OrthoLogic, and will be distributed nationally through Thera-Kinetics' 110-person direct salesforce.
External fixation devices are used to immobilize complicated fractures by securing threaded pins that are inserted through the patient's skin into the bone. They can also be used in limb lengthening procedures. In the United States, the market for these devices is estimated at approximately $60 million.
OrthoLogic is a developer of technologically advanced orthopaedic trauma products that enhance healing of musculoskeletal tissues. The company, founded in 1987, completed its initial public offering (IPO) in February 1993, and is headquartered in Phoenix.
