ORTHOLOGIC INTRODUCES ORTHOFRAME/MAYO WRIST FIXATOR

PHOENIX, Ariz., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- OrthoLogic (NASDAQ-NMS: OLGC), a developer of technologically advanced orthopaedic trauma products, announced today that it will add a new product, the OrthoFrame/Mayo Wrist Fixator, to its existing offerings. The OrthoFrame/Mayo Wrist Fixator is an upper-extremity external fixation device used by orthopaedic surgeons to immobilize severe wrist fractures (Colle's fractures). The product was developed by OrthoLogic in cooperation with the Orthopaedic Department of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., which will also provide ongoing clinical input on future product design enhancements.
The OrthoFrame/Mayo Wrist Fixator represents an extension of many of the same device design principles and product benefits of OrthoLogic's OrthoFrame, a general external fixation device used in treating complex bone fractures. Both utilize carbon fiber-epoxy materials to reduce device weight and eliminate the blocking of X-rays caused by metallic devices.
"At Mayo Clinic, efforts have been underway to develop a lightweight, radiolucent external fixator for the treatment of complex, unstable fractures of the distal radius. This new fixator provides these features, as well as a limited range of motion to promote cartilage nutrition during the time of fracture healing. Less wrist stiffness should result." said William P. Cooney, M.D., Chair of the Division of Hand Surgery, Mayo Clinic.
The OrthoFrame/Mayo Wrist Fixator comes preassembled in sterile packaging and can be easily adjusted using a single tool shipped with the product, significantly increasing ease of use for surgeons.
It has a lower profile than existing devices, resulting in enhanced comfort and convenience for patients. The fixator can also be located directly over the fracture site and adjusted for precise fracture reduction after placement.
External fixation devices are used to immobilize complicated fractures by securing threaded pins that are inserted through the patient's skin into the bone. In the U.S., the market for external fixation devices is estimated at approximately $60 million.
OrthoLogic is a developer of technologically advanced orthopaedic trauma products that enhance healing of musculoskeletal tissues. The company, founded in 1987, completed its initial public offering (IPO) in January 1993 and is headquartered in Phoenix.
OrthoLogic, OrthoFrame and OrthoFrame/Mayo Wrist Fixator are trademarks or registered trademarks of OrthoLogic Corp. Mayo is a registered trademark of the Mayo Clinic.
