ORTHOLOGIC CORP. AWARDED NEW RESEARCH GRANT BY NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

PHOENIX, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- OrthoLogic (NASDAQ-NMS: OLGC), a medical device manufacturer, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I research grant from the National Institutes of Health, under its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. According to Allan M. Weinstein, Ph.D., OrthoLogic Corp. president and chief executive officer, the award will be used to fund a study of the effect of low-energy electromagnetic fields on neurite outgrowth, and brings the company's total number of SBIR grants received to five.
The research study represents the first step in the exploration of application of combined low-energy electromagnetic fields as a method to induce or stimulate neurite outgrowth, a key element in nerve repair and regeneration. Previous studies of electromagnetic fields have demonstrated enhanced regeneration of central nervous system and peripheral nerve tissue, both in vitro and in vivo, but the mechanism of enhancement is currently unknown.
This study will be conducted at OrthoLogic Corp's Phoenix laboratory under the supervision of James Ryaby, Ph.D., the company's director of research. It is OrthoLogic's initial examination of possible relationships between EMF technology and the potential treatment of neurological disorders.
OrthoLogic Corp. is a developer of therapeutic devices that enhance healing of musculoskeletal tissues. The company was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Phoenix.
