 ORKIN RELEASES ANNUAL SURVEY OF NATION'S TOP 20 TERMITE CITIES
 ATLANTA, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlanta-based Orkin Pest Control announced its fourth annual "Top 20 Termite Cities" list today.
 Those cities termites like most to munch are:
 1. Miami 11. Raleigh/Durham
 2. Atlanta 12. Greenville, S.C.
 3. Tampa 13. Richmond
 4. Norfolk 14. Greensboro, N.C.
 5. Orlando 15. Charleston, W.Va.
 6 Los Angeles 16. Nashville
 7. Washington, D.C. 17. Knoxville
 8. Charlotte 18. New Orleans
 9. Dallas 19. Jacksonville
 10. Houston 20. St. Louis
 According to the survey, termites consumed enough wood in these 20 cities alone to build 220 new homes.
 Orkin's Consumer Specialist Judy Donner noted that while a hot, moist climate makes Southern cities popular among termites, they are found throughout the country. The only termite-free state is Alaska.
 "Swarming termites typically are seen in the early spring months, a signal the home may be infested," said Donner. "But homeowners may not realize the workers of the colony are eating away at the wood 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
 Donner suggests homeowners could make some improvements around their homes that could send termites looking elsewhere for food:
 -- eliminate moisture on pipes and in crawl spaces;
 -- ventilate crawl spaces;
 -- remove loose wood (firewood, tree stumps, etc.) from beneath
 and around the house;
 -- remove trellises from exterior walls;
 -- replace wooden sills on basement windows with concrete;
 -- install small-mesh screens on attic windows and vents.
 Two types of termites are common in the United States: subterraneans, which live in the soil and enter the wood for food; and drywoods, which live in and feed on wood. A third species, Formosan termites, the so-called "super termite," is found in some areas of the Gulf Coast.
 Donner advises homeowners to call a professional for a free home inspection. "An untrained eye may have difficulty spotting infestation signs since termites work deep inside the wood," she said. "Thousands of dollars worth of damage may be caused before termites are found," she added.
 Orkin is the world's best pest and termite control company, with more than 330 company-owned branches nationwide. Its parent company, Rollins, Inc., is headquartered in Atlanta and is listed on the NYSE.
