OREGON STEEL MILLS INC. ANNOUNCES PIPE ORDER FOR THAILAND

PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Oregon Steel Mills Inc. (NYSE: OS) announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Napa Pipe Corp. (Napa Pipe), was awarded a contract to supply 120,000 metric tons of steel pipe to the Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT). The contract value is approximately $87.2 million delivered to Thailand.
The PTT board of directors last week agreed to award two separate contracts to supply pipe for the project, worth a total of $147 million, to Napa Pipe and a six-company Japanese consortium. The award of the Napa Pipe portion is subject to a definitive contract being finalized.
The project involves the installation of a gas line running parallel to the existing trunk line laid from the Erawan gas field in the central Gulf of Thailand to the eastern coast of Thailand. It comprises two sections, the offshore stretch which is 36 inches in diameter and 425 kilometers in length, and the onshore part which is 28 inches and 110 kilometers in length. The Japanese group will supply 80,000 metric tons of 36-inch pipe.
Upon completion in 1996, the new pipeline will double gas delivery to 1,200 million cubic feet per day from the current level of about 800 million cubic feet per day.
Oregon Steel Mills produces steel plate and pipe from plants located in Portland; Fontana and Napa, Calif.; and Camrose, Alberta. Its Pueblo, Colo. plant, CF&I, produces steel rail, rod, bar, wire and tubular products.
