OPTICAL DATA SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES THE INDUSTRY'S FIRST 10BASEFL FIBER OPTIC ETHERNET WORK-GROUP HUBS

DALLAS, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Optical Data Systems Inc. ("ODS") (NASDAQ-NMS: ODSI), a leading intelligent hub supplier and manufacturer of the enterprise-class Infinity(TM) intelligent switching hub line, today announced the release of a new family of 10BaseFL stand-alone work-group hubs. The ODS WorkGroup Infinity 1100-FL10 and 1100-FL20 fiber optic series of 10BaseFL compliant work-group hubs support either 10 or 20 10BaseFL ports respectively in a compact 3.5 inch rack mountable unit. In addition, the 1100 series supports an additional optional port of either AUI or 10BaseFL.
A variety of management options are available which include advanced
SNMP as well as support for all nine Ethernet RMON groups. Advanced management provides a full-featured suite of hub control and diagnostic capabilities and with support for all nine RMON groups, the 1100 series provides extensive network diagnostics capabilities as well.
These hubs offer simple, low-cost connectivity for collapsed Ethernet backbones and Ethernet to-the-desktop applications. They support cable distances up to 2,000 meters (10BaseFL compliant). Tri-state LEDs are provided on a per-port basis to provide real-time visual representations on the state of each port. These LEDs provide at a glance port status and preclude the need to connect an external terminal or management station to view port status.
"This new series of stand-alone WorkGroup Infinity 10BaseFL hubs provide a full featured, yet inexpensive way to build a collapsed backbone wiring
structure via fiber optics. In addition they support fiber-to-the-desktop applications in a very cost effective manner," said Terry Gaston, vice president of marketing for ODS. "Along with their compact size and cost, these hubs provide the same full featured levels of SNMP management and RMON support found in our modular Infinity family of intelligent hubs," continued Gaston.
Management of the Infinity series of 10BaseFL hubs will be through ODS' LanVision(R) series of platforms that include LanVision for HP OpenView(TM) UNIX, HP OpenView(TM) for Windows, Sun NetManager(TM) as well as LanVision for IBM Netview/6000(TM).
The 1100 Series 10BaseFL hub prices start at $3,600 and are available immediately.
Dallas-based Optical Data Systems, Inc., announced the enterprise- class Infinity Hub product line in January 1993 and the remote-access Infinity MICROhub line in August 1993.
