Adapter Supports Ethernet 10BaseFL Fiber To The Desktop Solution
DALLAS, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Optical Data Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ODSI) (ODS), a leading intelligent hub supplier and manufacturer of the ODS Infinity(TM) intelligent switching hub line, has announced the ODS 677 10BaseFL fiber optic Ethernet adapter card. The ODS-engineered adapter, which utilizes 3Com's market leading EtherLink III(R) Parallel Tasking(TM) ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), is the market's first 10BaseFL fiber interface Ethernet adapter.
"This product was actually driven by demand from our customers who require fiber to the desktop," said Terry Gaston, vice president of marketing for ODS. "We call this process Customer Driven Engineering. We took the best available technology, which is 3Com's Parallel Tasking ASIC and coupled it with our considerable fiber optic and Ethernet experience and produced a high-performance, cost-effective fiber to the desktop solution. It's a Win/Win situation; the customer has exactly what they need and ODS has a market-first product innovation."
The ODS 677 employs 3Com's breakthrough Parallel Tasking architecture which allows data transfer at speeds 15-85 percent faster than competitive adapter products.
The ODS 677 has available SNMP management capabilities at the desktop, even on a hubless bus topology, which allows the user to view network activity, configure data, isolate faults and monitor performance, plus take the PC on and off the network without ever leaving the user's SNMP station. The ODS 677 also offers trouble-free PC tuning via an ISA autoconfiguration utility that senses PC configuration and sets the adapter's I/O base address, interrupt level and transceiver type. Also supplied are diagnostics and configuration programs that feature a full complement of drivers including support for Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager and Banyan VINES.
"ODS is first to market with an Ethernet 10BaseFL standards- compliant fiber optic adapter card," said Marty Palka of Dataquest. "The Ethernet adapter market has seen phenomenal growth in recent years topping 4.5 million units domestically in 1992. Driving a move to fiber to the desktop is the increasing usage of fiber backbone installations. Ultimately, it makes sense to deploy fiber to the desktop to take advantage of fiber's increased cable run lengths, reduced signal noise and increased reliability factors. This is definitely a good market opportunity for ODS."
Pricing for the ODS 677 is $495; it is available immediately.
Dallas-based Optical Data Systems, Inc. announced the enterprise- class Infinity Hub product line in January 1993, the remote-access Infinity MICROhub line in August 1993 and the WorkGroup Infinity 10BaseFL line in October 1993. The Infinity line represents a significant advance in intelligent hub technology. It includes port switching, high density modules, superior RMON based network management, and seamless integration of multiple networking standards (Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI and ATM). The Infinity was designed to optimally

support integration of the finest third party internetworking components so that ODS customers may continually upgrade their networks without replacement of the installed base of hubs. ODS is located at 1101 East Arapaho Road, Richardson, Texas, 75081 and can be reached at 214-234-6400.
