OPTICAL DATA SYSTEMS AND WINDATA FORM MARKETING ALLIANCE; OSA TO RESELL FREEPORT WIRELESS LAN SYSTEM

DALLAS, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Optical Data Systems, Inc. (ODS) (NASDAQ-NMS: ODSI), a leading intelligent hub manufacturer for multivendor computing environments and Windata Inc., a leading supplier of high-performance wireless data communications products, today announced that they have forged a strategic marketing alliance to offer wireless Ethernet(R) capabilities. Under terms of the agreement, ODS will resell Windata's FreePort Wireless Ethernet LAN System to its customer base. Officials of both companies stated that ODS customers will benefit greatly from the flexibility that Windata's wireless LAN technology offers. "With its central point control architecture, FreePort is a perfect complement to ODS' intelligent hub-based structured connectivity systems," stated Terry Gaston, vice president of marketing for ODS. "Thanks to this agreement, ODS customers seeking to connect users in areas not suited for cable connections, such as warehouses, factory floors, leased offices and historic buildings, as well as disaster recovery applications, will now have the means to do so. Our customers now have an alternate means of Ethernet connectivity free from the traditional structured wiring concept."
Bob Rosenbaum, vice president of product marketing for Windata, added that nodes connected to a network via FreePort provide the same high-performance as wired connections. "Ethernet and SNMP compatibility, as well as throughput comparable to wired Ethernet, ensures that FreePort will be transparent to ODS users. This will enable practical considerations to guide ODS customers in choosing the best media to implement their Ethernet applications."
Windata's FreePort Wireless LAN System is the industry's first Ethernet wireless LAN to provide wireless connectivity within buildings at transmission distances up to 260 feet (200,000 square foot coverage area) and offer performance, reliability and security equivalent to wired LANs. FreePort is designed to augment wired LANs in office environments where moves and additions occur frequently, on factory floors and other hostile environments, in temporary locations such as trade shows and on-site audits and in areas which are difficult to wire.
Dallas-based Optical Data Systems, Inc. announced the Infinity Hub product line in January 1993. The Infinity Hub represents a significant advance in intelligent hub technology, including port switching, high density modules, superior RMON based network management, and seamless integration of multiple networking standards (Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI and ATM). The Infinity was designed to optimally support integration of the finest 3rd party internetworking components so that ODS customers may continually upgrade their networks without replacement of the installed base of hubs. ODS is located at 1101 East Arapaho Road, Richardson, Texas 75081 and can be reached at 214-234-6400. FAX 214-301-3893.
