OPTELECOM ANNOUNCES CONTRACT AWARDS FOR FIBER OPTIC SENSOR MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY

 OPTELECOM ANNOUNCES CONTRACT AWARDS
FOR FIBER OPTIC SENSOR MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY
GAITHERSBURG, Md., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Optelecom, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPTC), announced the award of a contract for $250,000 from the U.S. Army Missile Command for development of manufacturing technology for fiber optic gyros. This contract includes an option by the government which, if exercised, would result in an additional $527,000 of work for Optelecom. The aim of this contract is to develop less expensive manufacturing techniques, allowing their application to a broader range of uses. Because of their greater ruggedness and reliability, fiber optic gyros are beginning to replace mechanical and laser gyros as direction references in aircraft, ships, robots, and missiles. In addition, the company has received a contract in the amount of $40,000 for delivery of fiber optic gyro components from a major aerospace supplier.
Optelecom has also received R&D contracts in two other fiber optic sensor areas. The company received a contract for $80,000 for continuing development of an underwater acoustic sensor from a major U.S. defense contractor and a contract for an amount yet to be negotiated from a major supplier of equipment and services to the oil field industry for continuing development on a fiber optic down-hold pressure sensor.
