OPENREACH AND OFS TO EXPAND GIGABIT BROADBAND COVERAGE.

Openreach has chosen OFS to help with its fibre deployment in existing buildings including multi-dwelling units (MDUs), which can pose a challenge for installers.

This is part of Openreach's programme to roll out faster, more reliable fibre-to-the-premises broadband to four million UK premises by March 2021 (up from three million).

MDUs can be challenging for installers, because it involves the connection of multiple customers as quickly and as reliably as possible, with minimum disruption. Engineers must deploy compact optical network terminates (ONTs) deep into the subscribers' homes to facilitate in-home networking. Tight spaces, corners, existing architecture and other factors can make deploying fibre more difficult. The InvisiLight Optical Solutions portfolio, from OFS, was designed to help meet these challenges.

It uses EZ-Bend optical fibre to allow worry-free bending around tight corners. In addition, InvisiLight can elevate the customer experience by delivering a plug-and-play solution that is adaptable to various scenarios. The installer adheres a 0.9mm diameter optical fibre into crevices along ceilings and walls, or mouldings and walls, that can practically disappear into the homeowner's decor.

OFS says that the fibre can help accelerate service adoption through faster and lower-cost installation than traditional installation techniques. This, in turn, can result in higher subscriber acceptance and take-up rates.
