ONTARIO TO RECOGNIZE UL MARK FOR CANADA ON ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) President Tom Castino announced today that the province of Ontario will now officially recognize the UL Mark for Canada on electrical and electronic products used in that province. With this action, the UL Mark for Canada is now recognized in nine of the 10 Canadian provinces, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. Quebec needs only to complete necessary actions for the UL Mark for Canada to be recognized in all Canadian provinces and territories. According to Castino, the Ontario recognition represents a significant advantage for manufacturers in Canada, the United States and other countries. "The provinces and territories that the UL Mark for Canada is now recognized in represent a great majority of the Canadian marketplace. These recognitions,
along with our accreditations from the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and our recognition by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), mean that UL offers its clients safety testing coverage in the broadest range of products of any certification organization in North America. Manufacturers can save time and money by coming to one source -- Underwriters Laboratories -- for `one-stop' product certification for both markets."
UL gained Ontario recognition after a nine month process which culminated in a revision to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code now includes the name of "Underwriters Laboratories Inc." as a recognized organization for certifying and labeling electrical and electronic products used in Ontario. UL was the first organization outside of Canada to be granted Certification Organization (CO) and Testing Organization (TO) accreditations by the SCC. UL has the broadest available CO and TO coverage in Canada and the broadest recognition by OSHA through its Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory program. NOTE: UL is an independent, not-for-profit organization that has tested products in the interests of public safety since 1894. UL evaluates more than 14,000 different types of products at its facilities in Northbrook, Ill. (corporate headquarters); Melville, N.Y.; Santa Clara, Calif.; and Research Triangle Park, N.C. More than 6 billion UL marks appear on new products each year. -0- 8/26/93 /CONTACT: Tammi E. Gengenbacher of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., 708-272-8800, ext. 42275/
