ONLINE COMPUTER SYSTEMS, INC., ANNOUNCES THE DOS VERSION 2.0 RELEASE
 OF OPTI-NET -- THE INDUSTRY-LEADING CD-ROM NETWORKING SOFTWARE
GERMANTOWN, Md., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Online Computer Systems, Inc., has released a new version of their OPTI-NET CD-ROM networking management software, which includes removable OPTI-NET device drivers and which will also remove Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions TSRs. The new OPTI-NET 2.0 DOS version also includes several other new features, including an optional SCSI bus disconnect/reconnect performance feature, a remote network management utility to monitor and control optical servers from anywhere on a network and centralized LAN management that eliminates individual user station installations and upgrades. In addition, the upgrade includes support for 255 CD-ROM drives and an unlimited number of optical servers on a network, monitoring of up to 100 users, with color graphics.
Inclusion of the new removable OPTI-NET device drivers and Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions TSRs means that after a user finishes using OPTI-NET to access a CD-ROM application, it is not necessary to reboot a user station to remove the OPTI-NET driver or Microsoft CD- ROM Extensions TSR from RAM. This allows systems administrators to create batch files to automate the process of accessing and executing CD-ROM applications and removing all OPTI-NET, Microsoft Extensions and associated software from RAM when finished.
OPTI-NET's new SCSI bus disconnect/reconnect feature permits connection of a device to host via an SCSI bus and, after the host issues a command, disconnection of the device from the host while the command is performed. The device is only reconnected to the host when the task is completed. While the first device is disconnected, the host may issue commands to other devices; thus improving overall optical server access times and data transfer rates.
The SCSI bus disconnect/reconnect feature also allows every CD- ROM drive to handle a user request simultaneously, resulting in increased overall optical server throughput. Current optical networking software solutions use interleaving access technology to handle user requests for CD-ROM databases. This results in queuing of user requests for any available CD-ROM drive, and requests are handled one at a time, whether the request is for the same CD-ROM database or different CD-ROM databases. Overall optical server throughput is severely limited.
Version 2.0 also features a new remote network management interface that monitors and controls optical servers from anywhere on a network. The new interface works on any monitor (mono, CGA, EGA, VGA) and will be familiar to Novell network administrators and users because the Novell menu-driven user interface format is used.
In addition to the remote network management feature, centralized LAN management has been added to eliminate individual user station installations and upgrades. Installation of the OPTI-NET user software may be performed centrally at the file server and is downloaded to user stations. This makes fast and easy installation and updating of all users possible.
OPTI-NET 2.0 DOS version is available in an 8-user configuration ($795) and in a 100-user configuration ($1,495). Current owners of the DOS version of OPTI-NET may obtain upgrade pricing information by calling Online at 800-922-0204, FAX 301-428-2903 (in Maryland, call 301-428-3700).
OPTI-NET CD-ROM networking management software allows CD-ROM drives connected to a workstation on a Novell or NetBIOS compatible LAN to be accessed simultaneously by multiple user workstations on that network. An OPTI-NET VAP version is also available to provide LAN access to CD-ROM drives directly connected to a Novell Advanced NetWare 286 version 2.X file server or bridge, or an Advanced NetWare 386 version 3.X router.
