ONE-STEP, ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE TONER DISPOSAL PROGRAM OFFERED BY XEROX ENGINEERING SYSTEMS

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A waste toner disposal program that recycles the used material and simplifies the removal process is being offered to customers of Xerox Engineering Systems, it was announced today.
The Xerox Liquid Toner Service Program reduces customers' paperwork, eliminates the time required to make arrangements for pickup and ensures that the waste toner from electrostatic plotters is disposed of properly. The program is made possible through an arrangement between Xerox Engineering Systems and Safety-Kleen, the world's largest recycler of liquid hazardous waste.
"This program satisfies two goals of our customers and of Xerox," said Paula Davison, director, supplies operations, Xerox Engineering Systems. "It takes the burden of disposal off their hands and ensures that the toner is disposed of in the manner best for the environment. In fact, Safety-Kleen takes the disposal process one step further -- they recycle the toner for use in other applications, eliminating the environmental problem of long-term storage."
Although liquid toner is not toxic, it has been designated hazardous by the
federal government because of its flammability. This means that used liquid toner cannot be discarded in the same way as common liquid wastes such as dishwater. It must be properly disposed of by professionals such as Safety-Kleen. After removing the used toner, Safety-Kleen blends it into supplemental fuel burned in cement kilns.
To initiate the disposal process, customers call the Xerox Engineering Systems Toner Disposal Clerk at a toll-free number. The clerk records all pertinent information, files it for future use and then contacts Safety-Kleen. Once the process is in place, Safety-Kleen will leave an empty drum at the customer site. When the drum is full, customers call a toll-free number and Safety-Kleen arranges for pickup. The cost to customers is no more than if they made all the arrangements on their own.
The toner disposal program, which applies to used liquid toner from Versatec electrostatic plotters, is available now. The cost for drop off and pick up of a single drum is $287 for a 30-gallon drum and $331 for a 55-gallon drum. The toll-free number to call to arrange for the service is 800-538-6468.
Xerox Engineering Systems is the world's largest supplier of engineering copiers, wide-format printers and fax machines, raster plotters and engineering document management systems.
