 ONE PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOL'S REORGANIZATION
PLAN IS AMONG TOP 14 IN THE NATION
The following statement was released today by School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. Constance E. Clayton relative to the selection of the Dimner Beeber Middle School as one of only 14 schools nationwide to receive a nearly $750,000 grant from the RJR Nabisco Foundation to fund a complete transformation of the school's curriculum and provide for an extended school year. (Please refer to PR Newswire story DC001 at 9:19 a.m. today.)
"As this significant grant from the RJR Nabisco Foundation clearly demonstrates, public schools in Philadelphia are at the forefront of the national effort to radically change education for the new century. Our society has changed dramatically, and in order to properly prepare students, schools must acknowledge these changes and develop new ways of educating. This is precisely what the Beeber School family has done and we in the the School District of Philadelphia are deeply gratified that their imaginative and innovative plan has received this important endorsement.
"The Beeber plan calls for the establishment of a 'student-centered school' with a drastically revised curriculum and a 39-week school year that affords students greater choices yet supports high student performance. Also Beeber will become a real parent-centered school with its Saturday morning Parent University that will educate the school family about education and develop more effective communication between parents and children.
"This triad of transformation puts Beeber squarely in the ranks of model public schools in Philadelphia and the nation which will lead us into the new century."
