ONE OF THE FOUR NEW CELL SITE BUILDINGS OF GTE MOBILNET
TO BE DONATED TO BIG SUR HISTORICAL SOCIETY
PLEASANTON, Calif., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Mobilnet announced today that it has turned on four new cell sites in Monterey country to meet the continual increase of cellular service usage in Big Sur and south of King City.
The Williams Hill site will serve Highway 101 between King City and Bradley. It will also cover the entire Jolon Valley/Fort Hunter Liggett area. The coverage is expected to be in excess of 1,000 square miles. The Highway 198/25 site will provide coverage to the Peachtree Valley as well as Highway 198 from the Monterey county line to King City. The Table Mountain cell site will cover the Parkfield area, plus the entire southeast corner of the county. The fourth new cell site named, Big Sur, will cover Highway 1 from Big Sur south to the Monterey county line. It will also provide additional coverage along the coastal waters.
A portion of Big Sur's building located next to the new Post Ranch Inn Resort will be donated by GTE Mobilnet to the Big Sur Historical Society to allow the artifacts to be stored. GTE Mobilnet assumed the total construction cost of $165,000.
"We are very excited to be able to provide additional cellular coverage simultaneously in various areas, especially due to tremendous amount of requests we receive from our South Bay and Monterey customers to meet their usage demands," said Tony Frank, area general manager-California. "Moreover, the building we use to house the equipment can be utilized to benefit the local community. So many parties can benefit from this type of arrangement," Frank added.
GTE Mobilnet Pacific Region -- the only cellular provider to service all 11 Bay Area counties as a single carrier -- owns and operates the largest, toll-free cellular network in Northern California. As the first company to initiate cellular service in the San Francisco Bay Area (April 1985), the company provides more than 10,000 square miles of toll-free cellular coverage.
GTE Mobilnet is a wholly owned subsidiary of GTE Corp. GTE is the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world. With approximately $20 billion in revenues in 1991, the corporation is the largest United States-based local telephone company and the second largest cellular-service provider in the United States. GTE also is a leader in government and defense communications systems and equipment, satellite and air-to-ground telecommunications, directories and telecommunications-based information services and systems.
