ONE ISLANDTWO DISTILLERIES; ISLE OF ARRAN DISTILLERS ARE EXPANDING. VISIT THE PICTURESQUE LOCHRANZA DISTILLERY AND BRAND NEW LAGG DISTILLERY OPENING THIS SPRING ON THE BEAUTIFUL ISLE OF ARRAN.

In 1995, Isle of Arran Distillers revived whisky distilling on the island with the building of a brand-new distillery in the village of Lochranza, situated in the north. Twenty-four years later and whisky distillation is now also being brought back to the south of the island with the construction of Lagg Distillery.

During the 1800s, the south-end of the island was a hotbed of illegal farm distilleries and casks would be smuggled off the shores in small boats headed for the mainland. The rebirth of whisky distilling at the south end of the Isle of Arran marks the beginning of another new and exciting era for the island. It is a tremendous boost to the local community and puts the Isle of Arran firmly on the map as a whisky destination for tourists coming to Scotland from all over the world.

The Distilling Team at Lagg Distillery will be under the watchful eye of Graham Omand, the nephew and protege of Isle of Arran Master Distiller James MacTaggart, who has been running operations in Lochranza since 2008. Graham will oversee the production of a heavily peated Single Malt Scotch whisky which will be earthy and rich in character.

Lagg Distillery will also be open to visitors, offering them the chance to tour the new Distillery and relax in the Cafe & bar which have panoramic views of the Ayrshire Coast and Kintyre Peninsula. The modern building is firmly rooted in the agricultural traditions of the south end of the island and will bring a new generation of whisky drinkers to discover the beautiful Isle of Arran and its two distilleries.

The Distillery at Lochranza will continue to produce the un-peated, award winning Arran Single Malt range.

As a destination, the Lochranza Distillery & Visitor Centre has become one of the most visited attractions on the island with hourly tours of the distillery as well as the welcoming CASKS Cafe and well stocked gift shop. It was awarded the top award in 2018 from ASVA (Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions) for Best Visitor Attraction, a high accolade in the tourism industry and testament to the quality and warmth of the welcome that is offered to the many tens of thousands of visitors who visit every year.

For those who wish to strengthen their connection to the Isle of Arran, there is still the opportunity for individuals to become a part of the history of Lagg Distillery by purchasing one of 700 casks to be filled from the first production which will take place this Spring. These casks were released in 2018 for advance purchase by Master Distiller James MacTaggart and have provided an incredibly exciting chance to be involved in this new island adventure from the very start. The Bourbon casks will contain approximately 280 70cl bottles-worth of a new, heavilypeated (50ppm) Single Malt that will be the style of whisky produced at the Lagg Distillery.

Full details on how you can become the proud owner of one of these inaugural casks of Lagg Whisky can be found from their web site at laggwhisky.com.

These are certainly very exciting times for Isle of Arran Distillers as a company. Master Distiller James MacTaggart says "With the opening of Lagg Distillery, this truly feels like the start of an exciting new chapter; not just in the story of whisky production on Arran, but for the island as a whole. We can not wait to welcome whisky fans old and new to show them the two sides of our beautiful island home."
